The Vermilion Mask & Firefly Wedding Review: Fall 2026's Two Best New Anime Premiered This Weekend
By Krishna Kumar | Senior Pop Culture & Manga Analyst | ZealPlane Chronicles
Every anime season has a moment where something you weren't tracking suddenly becomes unmissable. Fall 2026 had two of them in the same weekend.
The Vermilion Mask and Firefly Wedding both premiered within 24 hours of each other — one a dark supernatural action series built around masks that devour their wearers, the other a twisted Meiji-era romance between a dying noblewoman and the assassin she proposes to. They share nothing in genre, tone, or premise. What they share is the quality of their opening episodes.
Here's what you need to know about both.
The Vermilion Mask — Fall 2026's Dark Horse
The Vermilion Mask adaptation by 100Studio kicks off Fall 2026 with haunting dark fantasy intrigue.
What It Is
The Vermilion Mask follows Peru, a traveling mask merchant who possesses the ability to craft mysterious masks that give wearers unique powers — masks that also bring calamity, revel in slaughter, and carry a will of their own.
Written by Dr. Poro and illustrated by Nabana Naba, the manga began serialization before an anime television series adaptation produced by 100Studio was announced at Anime Expo 2025. Director Tetsuaki Watanabe leads the production, with 24 episodes planned across two cours.
What Episode 1 Actually Does
The premiere opens with atmosphere over action — dropping viewers into a dark, foreboding city where something feels deeply wrong from the first frame. The episode introduces three key figures: the enigmatic traveling merchant Pelle, whose creations carry a reputation for calamity; a mysterious young girl named Sonah; and a reluctant young boy pulled into circumstances far beyond his understanding.
That's a deliberate choice, and it works. The show isn't trying to hook you with a fight sequence in the first three minutes. It wants you uneasy before you're excited. The mask-crafting world is established through implication rather than exposition — you understand the rules are dangerous before anyone explains what the rules are.
At the center of the episode's success is its cast. Around the main personalities, The Vermilion Mask crafts a dark fantasy world primed to horrify when things get bad. The visual presentation leans into the moments of madness incredibly well — beyond how the visuals handle the warping side effects of some of the episode's magic, the presentation delivers on both the emotion and action.
The final minutes of the episode are “get off your seat” exciting, leading to a cliffhanger that makes you immediately wish episode two was already available. Director Tetsuaki Watanabe, known for immersive but singularly-focused action scenes, is the perfect choice for this material.
The Fullmetal Alchemist Comparison
It's being made already, and it's not wrong. The series has Fullmetal Alchemist vibes — specifically in the way it builds a power system that is visually spectacular but morally costly. Masks that grant power but “revel in slaughter” and carry their own will is exactly the kind of premise FMA built its best arcs around: gifts that aren't free, abilities that ask something back.
Whether The Vermilion Mask has the storytelling depth to sustain that comparison across 24 episodes is a question the next few weeks will answer. Episode 1 earns the comparison.
Where to Watch
New episodes release Saturdays at 2:30 AM PT / 5:30 AM ET on Crunchyroll. Episode 2 airs October 17.
Firefly Wedding — The Season's Wicked Romance
Satoko Kirigaya and Shinpei Goto in David Production's dark Meiji-era romance adaptation, Firefly Wedding.
What It Is
In the Meiji era, Satoko Kirigaya is the daughter of a distinguished family, but her poor health has left her with little time to live. Determined to marry into a respectable household and make her father proud, her plans are shattered when she is suddenly kidnapped. Cornered by the dangerous assassin Shinpei Goto, Satoko makes a desperate proposal to survive: marry her. What begins as a lie becomes increasingly complicated when Shinpei takes her offer — and his feelings for her — very seriously.
The anime adaptation is produced by David Production — the studio behind JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Fire Force — directed by Takahiro Kamei, with series composition by Y&umacron;ko Kakihara.
What Episode 1 Actually Does
Episode 1 of Firefly Wedding is exciting and twisted at the same time — a wicked love story if there ever was one. The setup sounds like a premise you've seen before (dying noblewoman, dangerous man, forced proximity), but the execution is sharper than that summary suggests.
Satoko is never fully safe in Firefly Wedding Episode 1 — threats exist both inside and outside her home. The episode wastes no time establishing its core characters, especially Satoko as the series' heroine. From there, the episode takes a huge tonal and visual shift that reframes everything before it.
What makes it land is Satoko herself. She's not a passive character waiting to be saved. She engineers the situation — proposes to the man pointing a weapon at her — and the show treats that as the story's actual starting point rather than a punchline. The Meiji-era setting adds weight to stakes that more contemporary romance anime can't access: the marriage market, family obligation, and the specific vulnerability of a woman whose time is genuinely running out.
This beautifully animated opening episode is worth watching for its great character development and intriguing moments in what could be the fall season's must-watch romance anime.
David Production's visual fingerprint is evident without being showy. The Meiji-period aesthetics are handled with care rather than used as mere costume design.
Where to Watch
Firefly Wedding airs on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block in Japan, with Crunchyroll simulcasting internationally. New episodes drop Fridays.
Two Different Shows, One Strong Weekend
The Fall 2026 season already has Dandadan, Blue Box, and Ranma 1/2 competing for attention. The Vermilion Mask and Firefly Wedding have now added themselves to that conversation with opening episodes that didn't hedge.
The Vermilion Mask is the season's dark horse — a supernatural action series that prioritized atmosphere over immediate payoff and delivered a premiere that ends on a cliffhanger worth remembering. Firefly Wedding is the season's elegant surprise — a historical romance with genuine darkness underneath its period-appropriate aesthetics.
Neither show wasted their first episode. In a season this crowded, that matters more than it sounds.
