Pepper and Carrot: Why This Open-Source Webcomic Has a Passionate Global Following

In the world of webcomics, Pepper and Carrot occupies a unique and fascinating position. Created by French artist David Revoy and published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, it is one of the most successful fully open-source comic projects in history. And on ZealPlane, where the first eight episodes are freely available, it has found an enthusiastic new audience among Indian comic readers.

The World of Hereva

Pepper and Carrot is set in the magical world of Hereva, a universe populated by witches, magical creatures, and enchanted landscapes. The protagonist is Pepper, a young witch-in-training, and Carrot, her expressive ginger cat. Together they navigate the demands of Pepper's magical education — brewing potions, entering competitions, and stumbling into adventures — with charm, humor, and occasional chaos.

The art is stunning: richly colored, beautifully detailed, and technically masterful. Revoy creates it entirely using open-source software including Krita, Inkscape, and Blender, making it a flagship demonstration of what open-source creative tools can achieve in the hands of a skilled artist.

Why Open Source Matters

The decision to publish under Creative Commons has had remarkable effects. Volunteers around the world have translated Pepper and Carrot into over 20 languages. Artists have created fan art, remixes, and derivative works. The comic has inspired software to be developed and educational curricula to be written. It demonstrates a model where creative work can thrive — and even be commercially sustainable through reader support — without restrictive copyright.

The Episodes on ZealPlane

ZealPlane hosts the first eight Pepper and Carrot episodes, covering some of the series' most beloved stories including the Potion Contest, Pepper's Birthday Party, and the magical wish episode. Each episode is self-contained enough for new readers to jump in anywhere, but rewards those who read from the beginning with an increasingly rich sense of Hereva's world.
