How Did Sukuna Bypass Infinity and Kill Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen? (Binding Vows & World-Cutting Slash Explained)

The Canon Verdict: Ryomen Sukuna bypassed Satoru Gojo’s "untouchable" Infinity and killed him in Chapter 236 using an evolved variation of his Dismantle technique known as the World-Cutting Slash (Slash That Bisects the World). Using Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga as a blueprint, Sukuna expanded the target of his technique from Gojo’s physical body to the entire coordinate space Gojo occupied. Because the slash severed space itself rather than traveling as a physical projectile, Gojo's Infinity could not slow it down. To fire the attack instantaneously with only one hand, Sukuna forged a permanent Binding Vow that crippled the technique's casting speed in all future fights.

Few moments in modern manga sparked more searches than the sudden jump between Chapter 235—where Gojo was declared the victor of Shinjuku—and the opening pages of Chapter 236. Understanding how Gojo died without breaking the rules of Jujutsu Kaisen requires examining how Gege Akutami engineered both spatial targeting and Binding Vows.

1. Why Normal Attacks Cannot Bypass Gojo’s Infinity

Gojo’s Neutral Limitless: Infinity does not put up a solid physical wall. Instead, it brings the mathematical Achilles and the Tortoise paradox into reality.

Whenever an attack approaches Gojo, the space between the projectile and his skin is divided an infinite number of times. A punch or standard Dismantle slash never technically stops moving—it just decelerates endlessly through infinite fractions (1/2, 1/4, 1/8), never reaching zero. As long as an attack must travel across space to hit Gojo, Infinity stops it automatically.

Before Chapter 236, sorcerers only had three ways to touch Gojo:

  • Domain Expansion: Using a Domain's guaranteed-hit (sure-hit) effect, which spawns attacks directly on the target.
  • Domain Amplification: Coating the body in an empty Domain aura to neutralize Gojo's technique on contact (which prevents the user from firing their own innate technique at the same time).
  • Specialized Cursed Tools: Weapons like Toji Fushiguro’s Inverted Spear of Heaven that forcibly nullify Cursed Techniques.

Once Sukuna’s Domain Expansion (Malevolent Shrine) was disabled by brain damage during their clash, he needed a way to bypass Infinity using his own innate technique. For that, he needed Megumi Fushiguro's Mahoraga.

2. How Mahoraga Provided the Blueprint to Bypass Infinity

Mahoraga’s Dharma wheel allows it to adapt to any phenomenon. Crucially, Mahoraga does not stop after finding one solution—as long as the wheel keeps turning, it continues generating different ways to bypass the same defense. During the Shinjuku battle, Mahoraga adapted to Gojo’s Infinity twice:

Adaptation Phase How It Bypassed Infinity Could Sukuna Copy It?
1st Adaptation (Ch. 232) Altered the internal frequency of its own Cursed Energy to neutralize Limitless on contact. No. Biologically impossible for a sorcerer to replicate manually.
2nd Adaptation (Ch. 234) Expanded the slash's target from Gojo's body to the coordinate space itself. Yes. Served as the exact model for Sukuna's World-Cutting Slash.

Why Sukuna Had to Wait for the Second Adaptation

When Mahoraga first bypassed Infinity, it did so by shifting the fundamental essence of its own Cursed Energy. Sukuna could not copy that trick. He had to protect Mahoraga until the wheel turned a second time in Chapter 234, when Mahoraga swung its blade and severed Gojo’s right arm from across the street.

Instead of throwing a projectile at "Satoru Gojo," Mahoraga expanded the technique's target parameters to slice space, existence, and the world itself.

Think of Gojo’s Infinity like a bulletproof vest drawn on a sheet of paper. A normal Dismantle draws a pencil line toward Gojo; the vest stops the line. The World-Cutting Slash takes a pair of scissors and cuts the entire sheet of paper in half. Because Gojo existed inside that three-dimensional coordinate plane, he was bisected right along with the space around him.

When our artists at ZealPlane Studio study how Gege Akutami staged this reveal, the visual foreshadowing is actually drawn right on the page in Chapter 234: when Mahoraga takes Gojo's arm, the slash slices cleanly through the background skyscrapers simultaneously—showing the reader that the entire geometric plane was cut before Sukuna ever explained it in Chapter 236.

3. How Sukuna Fired the Slash With One Hand (The Chapter 255 Binding Vow)

Even with the spatial blueprint explained, fans pointed out a major mechanical contradiction: at the end of Chapter 235, Gojo’s Unlimited Hollow Purple blew off Sukuna’s left hand, crippled his Reverse Cursed Technique (RCT) healing, and destroyed Mahoraga.

How did a half-dead, one-armed Sukuna pull off his hardest technique without Gojo’s Six Eyes dodging it? In Chapter 255, Akutami revealed the missing link: an emergency Self-Imposed Binding Vow.

  • The Original Requirement: Firing the World-Cutting Slash normally required Sukuna to form his Enmaten Domain hand sign—which strictly requires two hands.
  • The Shinjuku Crisis: Missing his left hand and facing a fully charged Gojo, Sukuna could not regenerate his arm in time.
  • The Permanent Trade-Off: Sukuna forged an instant Binding Vow with himself. To fire the World-Cutting Slash one single time against Gojo with zero hand signs and zero startup motion, he permanently added three heavy restrictions to every future cast:
    • He must form the two-handed Enmaten hand sign.
    • He must chant the full three-word incantation ("Scale of the Dragon, Recoil, Twin Meteors").
    • He must physically point his palm to direct the trajectory of the slash.

4. Why Characters Reveal Their Techniques (And How Binding Vows Work)

Sukuna’s survival hinges on the core rule of Jujutsu Kaisen’s combat system: Cursed Energy runs on risk and sacrifice. Akutami uses two types of Binding Vows throughout the series:

  • "Revealing One's Hand" (Jouhou Kaiji): Why do characters like Kento Nanami explain their abilities mid-fight? Because giving away the secret of your technique puts you at a tactical disadvantage. In exchange for taking that risk, a universal Binding Vow immediately boosts the user's Cursed Energy output. When we storyboard fights at ZealPlane, we look closely at how Akutami delays this: sorcerers almost always land a visual hit first, then explain the rule mid-fight as a "reload button" when they need extra lethal power.
  • Self-Imposed vs. Interpersonal Vows: As Kenjaku warns Mahito in Chapter 79, breaking a vow made with yourself only costs you whatever bonus you gained. However, Sukuna's one-time vow against Gojo was an irreversible payment—he got his instant slash first, meaning the three-step penalty became permanently locked onto his technique for the rest of the Shinjuku gauntlet, allowing Maki, Yuta, and Yuji to read and dodge it.

Frequently Asked Questions (Sukuna vs. Gojo)

Why didn't Gojo's Six Eyes see the World-Cutting Slash coming?

Gojo’s Six Eyes read the initial "spark" of Cursed Energy before a technique activates. Because Sukuna’s Binding Vow skipped the hand sign, chant, and pointing telegraphs, the spark looked identical to a standard Dismantle—an attack Gojo knew his restored Infinity would block automatically. By the time the target expansion registered, the coordinate space was already severed.

Why didn't Gojo use Reverse Cursed Technique (RCT) to heal after being cut in half?

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Cursed Energy originates in the gut (stomach), while Reverse Cursed Technique is directed by the brain. Because the World-Cutting Slash severed Gojo cleanly across the waist, it physically disconnected his brain from his Cursed Energy core in the gut, making it biologically impossible for him to generate the energy needed to heal his lower body.
