Pepper & Carrot – Episode 6: The Potion Contest

Episode 6 is a landmark moment in the Pepper & Carrot series — the first time our young witch leaves the familiar surroundings of her cottage and ventures into the grand city of Komona to compete in the prestigious Annual Potion-Making Contest. This is the big leagues: the most talented witches from across Hereva gather to demonstrate their brewing skills, compete for glory, and claim the coveted title of Grand Potion Master.

The city of Komona is a visual feast. David Revoy clearly relished the opportunity to design and paint a full magical urban environment — cobblestone streets, fantastical architecture, market stalls selling magical wares, and crowds of witches in a dazzling variety of styles, costumes, and familiar animals. Every background is packed with imagination, making this one of the most visually rich episodes in the series.

Pepper arrives at the contest full of confidence and Carrot by her side, only to be immediately humbled by the caliber of the competition. The other witches are formidable — experienced, poised, and armed with far more refined techniques than Pepper has yet mastered. What Pepper has, however, is something they may lack: genuine creativity, fearlessness, and a willingness to try the unexpected.

The contest itself is beautifully structured as a narrative. It builds genuine tension — who will win? — while also serving as a showcase for the broader world of Hereva and the diverse magical traditions within it. We see potion styles from different regions, different schools of magic, different philosophies about what witchcraft is and should be.

This is Pepper & Carrot at its most ambitious and most accomplished — a story about growth, courage, and finding your own voice in a world that already has plenty of brilliant voices.
